Iris Beryl Goldthorpe Lind, 96, Redwood, NY, passed away Sunday January 12th at Central Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Syracuse where she had been a resident since July 2023.

Iris was born on October 3, 1928 in Poughkeepsie, NY, where her father was supervising a steam-boiler installation. She was the third and youngest child of Richard Frederick and Sophie Lesperance Goldthorpe. She grew up in Greece, NY and graduated with honors in 1946 from John Marshall High School in Rochester, NY.

She married J. Fred Lind of Rochester in 1955 at Emmanuel Covenant Church in Rochester. Iris worked as an executive secretary for nine years at Hawk-Eye Works of the Eastman Kodak Co. in Rochester, then moved to Black Lake, NY as co-owner with her husband of the Hillside Camps resort. They were also co-proprietors of Crescent Recreation Bowling Alley in Ogdensburg. In later years, she held executive-secretarial or bookkeeping positions with Dr. Jerry Jacobsen in Ogdensburg and Rouse Construction in Watertown, then at Summerhays & Sons and Shepherd Showcase Co. in Rochester, J.S. Thermal Systems, North Country Power Plant Consultants, and Heath Photography in Redwood, Morrison Knudsen at Fort Drum; MacPherson Electric, Pine Tree Point, and the Chamber of Commerce in Alexandria Bay; and Georgian Courts in Fort Lauderdale, FL. She also worked as a library assistant at the Holland Library and a clerk at Cornwall Brothers Store, both in Alexandria Bay.

A talented artist, Iris also directed plays and acted in theater groups in Greece, NY, and in Ogdensburg, where she was also a member of the Zonta Club. She was a volunteer bookkeeper for the Redwood Fire Department. She enjoyed dancing, sewing, playing cards with her sisters and their families, cooking special breakfasts, and beach time in Florida.

She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Laurie Lind) Petersen, Sackets Harbor, NY, three grandchildren, Erin DiCaprio (Jason) Begel of Morristown, NY; Jeremy DiCaprio of Sandy Creek; and Joel (Anna) DiCaprio of Lake Placid; four great-grandchildren, Aidan, Isaac, Emory, and Leo Begel; nieces Shirley (Skip) Brennan, Connie (Ron) Staub, Sharon (John) Appleby, and Paula Burrows, and nephews Richard (Pat) Lind, Daniel (Arline) Lind, and Steve Swanson.

She is predeceased by her husband (2017); grandsons Luke (2007) and Zane (2024) Petersen; sisters Beatrice Edwards Slater and Hilda Milatz; and nephews Grant and Dane Edwards and Paul and David Lind, as well as nieces Marilyn Lindsay, Alice Lind, and Jean Wentworth

Calling hours will be held Thursday, January 16th, from 11-1 pm and funeral service at 1 pm, Costello Funeral Home, Alexandria Bay. Burial will follow at Notre Dame Cemetery, Ogdensburg.
