September 7, 2016 Alexandria Bay, NY Betty Virginia Root, 92, of Anthony Street, Alexandria Bay, peacefully passed away Wednesday at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg surrounded by her children. Betty was born on August 6th, 1924 in Alexandria Bay, the daughter of Craig and Leona Schryver Rupert. She attended schools in Alexandria Bay and Syracuse. She married Grant Rogers in September of 1942, was a homemaker, and had three children, Douglas, Rupert and Teresa. Mr. Rogers passed away in July of 1957. She married Gerald Root in 1964 and he passed away in 1992. Betty enjoyed spending time at the island in Goose Bay, boating, swimming, and hunting with family and friends. She also enjoyed golfing, snowmobiling, sewing, and gardening. She was one of the first to join the Alex Bay Ladies Golf League when it started and kept busy with Alex Bay Youth Center work. She was a Cub Scout den mother for years and was active in the Rebecca Lodge and the American Legion Auxiliary. Betty is survived by her children, Grant Douglas Rogers, Alexandria Bay, Rupert “Snooker” Rogers, Plessis, and Mrs. Richard (Terry) Hartman, Alexandria Bay, five grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at Highland Park Cemetery in Alexandria Bay on Tuesday September 13th at 1:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made in Betty’s name to the Alexandria Bay Volunteer Fire Department.
