Russell “Fred” Snyder, 83, of LaFargeville, NY, passed away on Thursday, July 27th at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse.
Fred was born on July 31st, 1933 in Oswego, NY, the son of Walter R. and Bessie V. Greene Snyder. He graduated from Fairlawn High School in Fairlawn, NJ. He proudly served in the US Navy on the USS Macon from 1951-1954, and afterwards was employed as a Licensed Boiler Operator for Hoffman-LaRoche (Pharmaceutical Manufacturer) out of Belvidere, NJ.
He married Charlotte Kilts on July 1, 1983 in Portland, PA.
Fred served as Mayor of Portland PA, was on the Board of Directors for the Fire Department and Ambulance Squad and was a Zoning Officer in Portland as well. In 1976 he designed the official “Portland, PA. Gateway to the Poconos” centennial logo. While driving tractor trailer in the late 1970s, he received a million mile safe driving award. He was also a member of the Hoffman-LaRoche Trap Shooting Club, enjoyed hunting, woodworking and boating on the St. Lawrence River.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; his son, Steven Snyder and wife Kathy, Bartonsville, PA; his daughters, Susan Jones and husband Thomas, Boca Raton, FL and Sheryl Irizarry, St. Mary’s PA; stepsons, Brent Bartron and wife Susan, Clayton, NY and Keith Bartron and wife Michelle, Belvidere, NJ; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A sister, Lorraine Brothers, predeceased him.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 12th at 1:00 pm at Costello Funeral Home, Alexandria Bay with Pastor Freddie Webb officiating.
