Barbara Ann Fenzel, 71, of St. Lawrence Park Rd., Alexandria Bay, passed away early Sunday morning at Hospice of Jefferson County in Watertown, NY, where she had been cared for since February 12, 2016.
Barbara was born on March 11, 1944 in Buffalo, NY, the daughter of Kenneth William and Charlotte Schurr Smalley. She graduated from the Cleveland Hill High School, Cheektowaga NY, in 1962 and then from Kaiser Beauty School as a licensed beautician. She married Thomas J. Fenzel on January 18, 1964 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Cheektowaga.
Barbara was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was a homemaker and also held various jobs including waitressing at Yazell’s Diner. She most recently was employed by the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority at the Boldt Castle attraction.
Barbara was active throughout her years as a board member on the North Jefferson Medical Board and the Alexandria Central School Board, as well as being the Events Coordinator for the Alexandria Bay/Clayton Senior Citizens, and a member of the St. Lawrence River Quilters and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, traveling, gaming, bowling, boating and fishing.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 52 years, Thomas Fenzel; her four children, Deborah A. (Joseph) LaClair, Amy J. Wiley, Tracy J. (Wayne) Denny, and Cheryl S. (Timothy) Parker; six grandchildren, Adam LaClair, Bryce and Ethan Wiley, Sydney and Emily Parker, and Carson Denny; two great-grandchildren; her sister, Suzann Smalley (Jack) Gerhardt; nieces and nephews; and her favorite Aunt Ionia. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her best friend and sister-in-law, Ann Fenzel Thompson.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 24th at 11:00 am at the Reformed Church of the 1000 Isles in Alexandria Bay, with Pastor Jeffrey McIlrath officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made in Barbara’s name to Hospice of Jefferson County or to the Reformed Church of the 1000 Isles.
