Larry S. Coles

Larry S. Coles, 66, of Hibbard Point, passed away Monday evening at the Samaritan Keep Home in Watertown.

He was born December 2, 1950 in Norwich, NY, son of William and Laura Rogers Coles. He graduated from Alexandria Central High School in 1969. He worked as a contractor for Davis Construction in Redwood for many years.

Larry was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and being outdoors with nature. He was a skilled crafter and woodworker. He created many scaled miniatures of existing buildings.

He is survived by his mother, Laura Coles, and his sister and her husband, Eileen and Gary Maloy, of Goose Bay, a nephew, William Maloy of Hammond, as well as aunts and uncles.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Andy LaFirst

Andy (Gump) LaFirst passed away on Thursday, May 25th at the Jefferson County Hospice at Ellis Farm in Watertown.
Andy was born on June 23rd, 1940 in Alexandria Bay, the son of Andrew and Susan Bishop LaFirst. He graduated from Alexandria Central School.
He married his best friend and love of his life, Sandra Hogan, on December 30, 1959 in Watertown.
Andy worked as a painter, in his early married life, for the late James Parker. He operated the Flat Rock Cafe in Plessis while also working at New York Air Brake for years until his retirement.
His love for his children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren never went without notice. He ate breakfast with them at the Northstar almost every morning. He was an avid golfer and played with the Alexandria Bay Golf League Continue reading →

EDWARD D. BRADY

Edward D. Brady, 65, of 2nd Street Redwood, NY, passed away Monday, May 15th at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.

Edward was born on September 8, 1951 in Watertown, the son of Daniel S. Sr. and Jean E. Latham Brady. He graduated from Immaculate Heart Central in Watertown.  He received his AA degree from Jefferson Community College and then earned his BS degree from Rochester Institute of Technology.

Ed married Dorothy Dollinger on September 24, 1994 at St. Francis Xavier in Redwood with Msgr. Bailey officiating.

HANNAH M. CHALTAIN

Hannah M. Chaltain, 94, St. Lawrence Ave, Alexandria Bay, passed away at her home early Thursday morning, with her loving family by her side, under the care of Hospice.

Hannah was born on September 7, 1922, the daughter of John and Florence Kelly Drews.  She graduated from State College of Westchester, PA.  . She married Douglas Chaltain on December 28, 1953. He passed away August 7, 1974.

Hannah was a first grade teacher at Alexandria Central for 35 years. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, the Alexandria Bay Senior Citizens, and St. Cyril’s Church Choir. She travelled extensively and enjoyed playing cards, quilting, sewing and especially tap dancing, which she continued to do until she was 90 years old. Continue reading →

Viola J. Richard

Viola J. Richard, 77, of Rte. 37, Hammond, passed away on Wednesday, May 3rd at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse where she had been a patient since April 27th.

Viola was born on May 12, 1939 in Potsdam, the daughter of Albert and Irene Mason Horton.  She graduated from Norwood/Norfolk High School.  A marriage to Ronald Gilbo ended in divorce.  She married Harold Richard in Briar Hill, NY on August 17, 1976. Mr. Richard passed away on February 18, 2002. She was a homemaker, loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, liked going on day trips shopping and seeing the countryside, and was always adorned with her rings and jewelry that she enjoyed wearing.  She was member of the First Congregational Church of Morristown.

Viola is survived by her eleven children, Jim (Beverly) Richard, Hayward, CA; Robert (Connie) Richard, Hammond, NY; Howard Richard, Hammond, NY; John Gilbo, Hammond, NY; Peter (Sally) Gilbo, Russell, NY; Harold (Jennifer) Richard, Jr., Morristown, NY; Albert (Laura) Richard, Hammond, NY; Paul Richard, Hayward, CA; Irene (Milton) Marcellus, Hammond, NY; Patricia Richard-Smith (Brett Mercer), Alexandria Bay, NY; and Victor Richard, Hammond, NY; her companion of eight years, Reginald Smith, Carthage, NY; her daughter-in-law, Ellen Gilbo, Ogdensburg, NY , numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her siblings, Lisa Davidson, Massena, NY; Cresson Horton, Ogdensburg; Kevin and Robin Horton, Morristown, NY; Judy and Gary Holland, Ogdensburg, NY; Barbara LaPointe, Hammond, NY; Jim Horton, Morristown, NY; Mike Horton, Schenectady, NY; Danny Horton, Schenectady, NY; Mary Mills, Ogdensburg, NY .  She was predeceased by her son Donald Gilbo of Ogdensburg, who passed away in 2015; as well as her siblings, Benny Horton, Schenectady, NY;  Nancy Van Patten, Briar Hill, NY; Jacqueline Power, Schenectady, NY; William Mason, Lisbon, NY; and Frederick Horton, Briar Hill, NY.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of her family.

Memorial donations may be made to the First Congregational Church of Morristown.
